KNOW YOUR RAGA

Introduction to Hindustani Classical Music

No musical system in the world ever contained a scientific yet aesthetic aspect of music, with emotions, seasons, time, feeling, and mood like Indian music. To this day, people dedicate their lifetime studying the music of India.

Unlike a scale which has a set number of notes not truly positioned, the raga has a defined position, as well as defined flows in upward and downward directions. Even then, subtleties take place, such as flattening an already flattened note, or shaking a particular note. These subtle features are what make Indian classical music so very fascinating!

Even if pure classical is not your forte, its knowledge can lay a great foundation for you to excel in other genres of music. Look at almost any contemporary lead vocalist - be it  Shankar Mahadevan, Adnan Sami, or Shreya Ghoshal - and you will find that somewhere down the line they have had formal training in classical music. If you like treading into the fusion territory of numbers by Shafqat Amanat Ali (Fuzon), Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shubha Mudgal, then you absolutely must "KNOW YOUR RAGA".
